75/100It was a fun read, just the ending needed work.Continue on AniListJigoku no Enra was a breath of fresh air for me. I've mainly been reading either really fluffy stories or really edgy dramas. This gave me a mix of the two with some of the shoujo fantasy elements I love!
The story begins with the children of the king of Hell, Yama, taking part in a competition: whoever removes the most names from Yama's list of current and future sinners will be the next king of Hell. Enra, one of Yama's younger sons, locates someone who is about to commit a grave sin, Komachi Takamura. However, Komachi is the daughter of a lawyer and public prosecutor and wants to follow in her parents' footsteps. She strives for justice and virtue, and she highly doubts that she is the dangerous sinner Enra makes her out to be. Her sin won't even appear in the mirror that faultlessly shows everyone's future sins.
The majority of the manga follows Enra and Komachi's adventures in an episodic format. They use the scroll to find local sinners and do what they can to turn it into points for Enra. All these sinners have their own problems and reasons for committing their sins. Along the way they encounter all of Enra's siblings on their quest for the points. This is probably the strongest point of the manga.
The ending was where I had the most issues. So much of the plot was left unresolved. It felt very rushed. I would have liked to see Enra try and deal with the highest ranking sinner instead of only hearing about it, especially since it was such a big deal to Enra. The contest's end felt so abrupt. The conclusion left so little resolved, and it felt like everything that happened had been for nothing (story-wise).
I did love the twist that set the end into motion. It greatly benefited the story. It was very fitting and the way it played out was very well done.
The characters were fantastic. Komachi is a great lead. She's stubborn and defined by her strong sense of justice and morality. However, she's also flawed in that she believes that she's the only one who is right. Enra is rather chaotic and brutish, reminiscent of other supernatural male leads such as Kamisama Kiss's Tomoe and Mugen Spiral's Ura. While he does maintain his brash and wild personality he does gain sympathy and perspective. Other characters who are standouts include Enra's servant, Koko/Fanfan (depending on the translation), who is a chaotic and enigmatic character, the type to propose murder as the answer to all his problems. Rokuzan, Enra's (slightly) older brother is also very well written. He begins very silly and incompetent, but he really grows as a person.
The other siblings were really fun, too. We have the two-faced Ruuren, the cute but insecure Ren-Ren, and the boisterous but highly competent Rinze. The sinners were surprisingly fleshed out, too. I don't think I disliked any of them.
The art was really good! I loved the character designs. Komachi and Rinze are beautiful, while the brothers all have lovely designs that make them look related but not identical. I'd keep an eye on the mangaka's other projects if not for the pretty art. (o^▽^o)
Overall, it was a fun read, even if I had issues with the ending. I'd recommend it to my fellow shoujo fantasy fans in need of a shorter read.
