63/100Surprise, not actually about gaming.Continue on AniListGaming has stuck with me since childhood. Many memories were made from it, and new friends were met because of it. So I thought to myself that as a gamer, this anime would definitely stick out to me. It definitely did, in more ways than one.
Misunderstandings: The Anime has something going for it. Brought to you by Studio Pine Jam
We have our MC, Keita, who seems to be one of the most passionate people for gaming. He does almost nothing but look down on his phone, doing what he does best: gaming.
In Keita, I see myself. Although not as addicted as he is, I certainly do have a great passion for gaming. We then have our famous blonde, Karen. Seen as the popular girl, but really is something else at heart: She is also a gamer. Seeing that Keita has similarities to her, she then decides to take action and get him to join the video games club. Of course, it’s not too easy.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the opening sequence of the series. The amount of references to games I played is phenomenal and brings back nostalgia. I’m sure some of you who might be reading this might feel the same. Street fighter, Resident Evil, Super Smash Bros, a Tales Game (Phantasia I'm sure), to even PUBG! Of course I haven't played all these games, but I sure do recognize them.
The art is not too appealing, but it’s enough to keep me watching. Of course, it’s a pretty unknown studio doing this, but they’re not doing that bad of a job.
It seems that misunderstandings in the anime will be a main focus in the anime, as expected since it did say that in the synopsis.
Keita is someone that enjoys the games he personally likes, and actually doesn't prefer playing games that don’t appeal to them. Even though he was offered as chance to join the club, he prefers playing games his own ways. That is something I can appreciate about his character. I mean, he was practically forced to play CS:GO. It hurts considering he plays so…badly. But of course, it seems to be his first time with fps. So no complaints.
Overall the main focus of the anime tries to give us clusters of situations leading to misunderstandings. If you don't like that type of thing, I would suggest staying away. Trust me, I don’t like misunderstandings too much either. However, my passion for gaming overloads that concern, and I started watching anyway.
If you like comedy, awesome character interactions, and many gaming references, pick this up.
If you want a complete romance series without any misunderstandings, this ain’t the one for you (unless in the future it somehow changes into that type of anime, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon.)Overall, I enjoyed this series so as a gamer and anime only. Although not the greatest, it does what it does best: annoying the viewers. Cause it did annoy me even when I knew what I was getting into.

70/100The misunderstandings are what make the anime interestingContinue on AniListIf I had to describe Gamers! in one word, I would say “mess”. Not a mess as in that the anime is bad, but a mess in the way that ties the story together and progresses it. Not a ‘beautiful mess’ per se, but you get my point. If you’ve heard about this anime on Reddit, YouTube, etc. before reading this review, you probably already know that those who’ve watched it frequently call it “Misunderstandings: The Anime”. They aren’t exactly wrong. While romance anime, and anime in general, is known for the ‘misunderstandings’, Gamers! takes it to the far end. While some might find the misunderstandings annoying and get turned off from watching by them, they make the anime interesting. While it can be extreme, the misunderstandings progress the plot and create many humorous situations. Gamers! can be an annoying anime to watch, but the annoyances don’t make it a bad one.
Gamers! is only nominally about gaming, while mostly being about relationship trouble and the ‘misunderstandings’ (as to be expected from a rom-com anime). It stars Amano Keita, a ‘loner gamer’ who loves games for their enjoyment value. The other main characters include: Tendou Karen, the standard top-of-the-class blonde girl who is the president of the school’s ‘Game Club’ who tries to get Amano to join; Uehara Tasuku, a ‘reformed gamer’ who still likes to play games but gave up being a ‘nerd’ in order to fit in more; Aguri, who is Tasuku’s girlfriend and doesn’t play games; Hoshinomori Chiaki, who is very like Amano, but has a very different philosophy when it comes to games; and Hoshinomori Konoha, who is Chiaki’s sister and is mostly relevant in the latter half of the anime. Together, these five (Chiaki’s sister is not a part) form the ‘love pentagon’, or rather, make one up inside their head. All of these characters are unique, despite the tropes that they convey. Due to the way the anime tells its story, if you don’t like the characters, you probably should drop the anime.
Although they can be very annoying, the misunderstandings are ultimately what make Gamers! interesting. If it was just a standard harem anime where all girls had a crush on Amano, Gamers! would just be cookie-cutter and boring. The added misinterpretations and mix-ups are what make Gamers! its own anime, and are not as bad as some people on Reddit might imply. The confusion that all of the characters have are oddly familiar, and will probably remind of you of whatever misunderstands you had while in high school.
Gamers! isn’t anything ground-breaking, but it’s worth a watch. If the misunderstandings are not ~that~ annoying to you, then you will hopefully see that it’s what makes the anime good. The only sad part about it is that the Light Novel series that it’s based on has only been officially translated into German, making it near impossible for those who don’t know Japanese to continue with the series after the anime ends.

75/100Generic, yes. Boring? No, not 100%Continue on AniListGeneric. Generic means something that has been overdone to the point that it becomes predictable/obvious. Generic is something that comes off as cheap or as a knockoff or really ridiculous. A lot of romcom anime tend to fall under the term, "generic." Whether it's another one of those trashy ecchi-harems where the MC is as oblivious and dense as the ocean towards the horny girls that want to share a bed with him or those predictable battle shounens where you 100% KNOW that the MC will NEVER die and the villain ALWAYS has a tragic backstory.
Is "Gamers!" generic and just another one of those silly romcoms? Yeah, it is. Does generic 100% = BAD?! No, not always. In fact, generic CAN be fun sometimes! Generic romcoms can be fun to watch if you're someone like me who watches mainly action, fantasy, scifi, supernatural series and want a taste of something different for a change of pace. Even as someone that usually prefers their anime to be kind of dark and violent at times, watching something generic can be really enjoyable! While it has issues such as SUPPOSEDLY being about video game otaku which then switches over to a 100% romcom and tosses away the otaku aspect to the many, and I mean MANY misunderstandings and love drama, I still don't "HATE" this anime.
Things got repetitive here and there but the anime still managed to make me laugh and smile a fair amount of the time. I actually thought that this was a REALLY cute romcom! Not as good as similar anime like Wotakoi of course but, still a fun light hearted watch nonetheless! If only it were much longer though. What a dang shame.
I highly recommend this to people that want a cute little romcom or something that is good to watch as a breather or can be used to perk you up whenever you're feeling extra grumpy! Sure, it's not perfect and yeah, it doesn't do anything "new" or "exciting" but, that's not always a bad thing. At least, not in my book. You don't even have to be a video game otaku to enjoy this series either! While there are plenty of video game references they're just there to make you point you finger at them and laugh. If you want an anime that is similar to Gamers! then, give Wotakoi a watch! It's also about video game otaku~
