DESCRIPTION
Sent to jail after being accused of murdering Getter Robo creator Dr. Saotome, Ryoma Nagare must once again team up with his former comrades and pilot Getter Robo when Saotome returns from the dead and threatens humanity by unleashing his greatest creation - the Shin Dragon. Their efforts, however, are in vain as they fail to stop a nuclear warhead from hitting Shin Dragon, resulting in a massive Getter Ray contamination that wipes out 99% of the planet's population. Thirteen years after this great catastrophe, mankind continues to fight for survival against the Invaders. Out of the remains of the nuclear blast comes Shin Getter, piloted by the artificial human Go. With remnants of the Japanese military by his side, Go - along with co-pilots Kei and Gai - must use Shin Getter to exterminate the Invaders once and for all.

100/100A series with fantastic characters, action, visuals and music, Getter Robo Armageddon is a must watch.Continue on AniListArmageddon is a love letter to the Getter Robo franchise and exceeds every aspect it set out to accomplish. By borrowing elements from every arc of the manga it manages to create a completely original story with tons of nods and references to what you already know while still creating an engaging and emotional story of its very own. I loved seeing the leaders of both the dinosaur and hyakki empire show up as minor enemies and getting to see the Getter Emperor, my personal favorite mech from the series, in a small cameo.
Ryoma, Hayato and Benkei are shown with more complexity and flaws than they ever were in the saga while still managing to keep all of the elements that made them fun and likeable in the first place. Ryoma still feels like a badass hotheaded loose cannon who will do anything to get the job done while still feeling guilt and regret over the death of Michiru and none of these elements contradict one other or feel out of place.
Saotome’s turn from ally into the main antagonist feels both tragic and unavoidable, you can understand his hatred for the Getter pilots after what happened to his daughter and you can see how a man already considered on the edge by his peers became humanities greatest enemy. He’s easily one of the best mad scientist archetypes I’ve ever seen.
Kei’s story fits in well with Getter Robo’s theme of evolution and growth and manages to utilize a very underdeveloped character from the series and turns them into one of the strongest members of the cast. The reveal of who she actually is doesn’t feel out of place at all.
Gou is a great addition to the series and his stoic personality proves to be an interesting foil to Ryoma’s hotheadedness that we’ve grown accustomed to. He also manages to stand on his own without it feeling like it comes to Ryoma’s detriment as a character in the story. They both feel equally important, unique, and likeable for their own reasons. Even when Ryoma is temporarily taken out of the story so that Gou and his friends can be established.
Armageddon’s ending feels like a strong final salute to the original trio and comes across as completely fitting, awesome, and deserved. They will fight the enemies of humanity for eternity in the distant future while leaving the job of safeguarding the past to those that they have watched rise to the task and I can’t think of a better conclusion for Ryoma in particular than something like that.
The series has fantastic visuals, action, and music on top of an excellent story which leads to this being one of the best OVA’s I’ve ever seen and easily the strongest entry in the Getter Robo franchise.

90/100The best incarnation of Getter Robo, the super robot that defined the genre.Continue on AniListIn the history of mecha anime, one of the most important early works that would go on to influence countless others is Getter Robo. It was the very first mech to incorporate the, now iconic, trop of combining or GATTAI. Additionally, it was a lot more violent, vicious and over the top than its predecessors. Many of the genre's staples come from Getter and the franchise is equally as unhinged and insane as the stories that encompass it. Armageddon is by far the best entry of the series when it comes to its anime and it provides the best taste of what the franchise has to offer.
Getter robo Armageddon is one of craziest and highly entertaining super robots ever made. It is filled with so much mecha action and violence packed into the single 13 episode run. The show is pure turn your brain off and watch a big robot wreck absolute mayhem in the most fun way possible. Getter robo was the first over the top and crazy mecha and Armageddon perfectly carries that spirit. Both the character and battles are equally insane and wonderfully unhinged. It is not a series with deep philosophical themes but one of the most entertaining mecha rides you can go on.
Armageddon takes a lot of elements of previous getter media, and like the iconic combination sequences, smashes them all together in this one thrill ride of an OVA. You don’t need to be aware of parts of the franchise in order to fully experience this fantastic roller coaster. The OVA format allows the series to shine in all its insane glory. Getter’s iconic rough artstyle is perfectly captured and the animation is consistently amazing for the whole run. The show is as brutal and gory as the series should be and it has an amazing OST. While there is a weird transition after the 3 episodes as the OVA switched directors, it doesn’t take long for the story to get back on track and continue the adrenaline rush.
In the world of super robots, Getter robo might be one of most influential and important works in the genre. While often regarded as the edgy younger brother to the more popular Mazinger Z, a lot more future works call back to Getter than Z. From the genre defining combination sequences, the power of friendship through that combination, drills as Getter 2 was the first to use them, to being completely over the top, the series has left one of the most remarkable marks on mecha that is often overlooked. However, it is a legacy that shall never be forgotten as its successors would go on to be some of the best mecha and anime in general. From Ideon, to G gundam, to all of the Brave series, to countless others. For a matter of course its most successful and poignant inheritor is not only THE best super robot ever made but one of the stories of all time: Gurren Lagann.
