70/100This manga is a fun read with good characters and an interesting premise that's not fully realized yet. 7/10 for now.Continue on AniListAt the time of this review, there are only 17 chapters, so I will be reviewing with that in mind.
That being said, let's get on with it!
QUICK OVERVIEW
This manga is about Yachiko Togakushi, a deadpan high school girl with a talent for kendo, and Giko, a mischevious ghost who inhabits gaps. Giko's goal is to write a dictionary and fill it with all types of girls in the hopes that he will eventually be able to understand them.PLOT AND CHARACTERS
For the most part, this series follows a girl of the week formula, with a new girl being introduced every chapter or two. The girl's story is covered, and her information is entered in the Girl Dictionary. The girls are all pretty interesting, and offer different perspectives and personalities. From a girl with chronic narcolepsy, to a girl who can see ghosts, to a girl who writes fanfiction, they have some fun variance that keeps you interested. They offer both lighthearted and sweet stories as well as more melancholy ones. They are all unique enough to be memorable and get you invested in their character, even if they only appear briefly. A few of them also become reoccuring cast and friends of Yachiko and Giko.Although that's the crux of this manga's format to date, it also has some story elements that are more linear and seem to be building up an overarching plot. Giko and Yachiko are the current standouts for this series by nature of being the main protagonists. They have a fun dynamic, with Yachiko playing the straight man archetype to Giko's mischevious demeanor. Yachiko and Giko are in every chapter, and their interactions with each other and with each of the other girls lends to the gradual development of their relationship. Yachiko grows increasingly curious about the mystery of Giko's death and darker traits, while Giko begins to think of Yachiko less as a specimen and more as a friend. It appears that the main plot elements going forward will be that of Giko's death as well as his relationship to a former friend.
ART
The art in this manga is pretty nice. Marie Yasui is a very talented artist and animator, and that skill shows in their manga. I would point out that the backgrounds in this series are sometimes a bit lacking, but that doesn't really take away from my enjoyment. The character art is cute and creepy in equal measure, and the dictionary pages of the girls are all very pretty! I think the mangaka's style really works more in their animated works, but their manga style is still nice.PROS AND CONS
To close out before I give rankings, I'll just say some things that I like and dislike about this series. First off, I enjoy Yachiko and Giko both quite a lot. They are fun and interesting and I quite like their dynamic and gradually progressing friendship. One thing I don't care for as much is the fanservicey humor at times, but that sort of comes with the territory I suppose. It isn't too much fanservice and it's generally just played for laughs, but that kind of humor just doesn't hit for me. Aside from that, the humor in this series is pretty fun and I enjoyed it. The girls in this series are interesting, although some are more engaging than others. If you don't like a particular character then great! You likely won't see her again. But by the same token, if you really like one of the girls she also might not reappear. This series does a good job building up suspense and making you wonder about the backstory of Giko and why he is making his girl dictionary.SCORES
Story: 6/10 (Could change with more chapters!)
Characters: 7/10
Art: 7/10
Enjoyment: 8/10
Overall: 7/10I'd recommend giving this manga a shot at some point, although it might be worth it to bookmark and come back to it later, when it has more chapters to read. It's a fun story and you'll probably enjoy it if you tend to like supernaturals, somewhat episodic formats, cute girls, and fun character interactions. If you're looking for a particularly deep plot though, this probably isn't the manga for you.
