55/100It takes more than pretty art to make me fall in love with this manga.Continue on AniListThis was one of the first high school romances I started so I was a lot more lenient on it when I started reading. And a few nights ago, when I was trying to keep up with it, I realized that I had read so many better manga, and I just stopped caring about this series at all. I always knew it was deeply flawed, but it was addicting, and I had fun reading it. However, as I read more and more shoujo romances, I realized that this series was really just mediocre at best.
Chiken Sana didn't choose her school because of the academics. What she wanted was no uniforms, and a chance to see her celebrity crush, the social media influencer, Ugou Kanato, who's a student there, in the grade above her. What Chiken didn't expect was to be pulled into her idol's life. In danger of being expelled, Kanato must use his status as a celebrity and a student to bring more people to the school, but the only problem is, his status comes from his looks alone, and he's not exactly tech-savvy. Chiken finds herself as his assistant who takes over the social media parts, where Kanato only has to look good. However, Chiken has a thing for pretty faces, and Kanato has the prettiest one around...
I'm just going to say that this manga had potential, despite the plot-hole in the premise. If he's a social media influencer, shouldn't he know how to use technology? Isn't that like the one basic skill you need to be an influencer? It's not like he has people to do it for him, since he's just some normal, attractive guy, and if he had someone helping him, the plot wouldn't have happened in the first place. I think it could have been really cool to go into the world of social media and influencers, the darker side of social media, and figuring out how to market the school using Kanato. However, all we see them doing is taking random pictures of Kanato and putting it on the school social media account. I just feel like the premise is wasted. We could have had these two kids falling in love over learning how to market on social media and discovering how being an influencer isn't as nice as they think. Instead, we get a rather boring romance.
I'm going to address another random thing that made no sense. Kanato ends up in Chiken's class (yes, I want to read her name as Chicken, and it's very difficult for me to avoid making chicken jokes). It's allegedly for influencer stuff, even though her job is a secret, and they take no pictures in class. It's simply weird since he's a whole grade above her and having him go back to his first year of high school for no reason makes no sense. They could have at least made up an academic reason or something.
The romance is pretty standard and boring. The characters are not very interesting (I'll get to that in a second), and it was just very difficult for me to believe a lot of what was going on. Kanato will get all up in Chiken's face, and he'll do something obviously flirty with a straight face. And the fact that it's just used as a cue for the audience to ship them, and not as something that affects their relationship or makes them think about their feelings at all makes no sense. If it were played like Kanato not getting personal space or Chiken realizing that he may be seriously into her and that her celebrity crush might go somewhere, that would be fine. But it's just there, and neither character really acknowledges it, and it was just frustrating for me.
I also have no idea what's going on with the plot right now, since they achieved their goal, and I guess they're dating now? Either way, I don't care very much.
Chiken has as much personality as a roast chicken, which isn't very much. She likes dudes with pretty faces, and she gets swayed easily by their looks. She feels more like a self-insert than an actual character. I don't know what she likes other than attractive men or anything about her, which is frustrating. Kanato is slightly less empty since he has an insecurity. He's afraid of people only seeing him as a pretty face, and he wants to be seen as a real person. I think that could have been interesting if the story went in a different direction like the alternative one that I proposed. However, he's so boring that I couldn't even tell you what kind of person he really was. There's also the love rival, whose name I forgot. He and Chiken bonded a bit, and I felt like there was a bit more chemistry there, but he ultimately was on the same level as the other two. He's the awkward and shy kid, but he's actually secretly very attractive, he just hides his sparkly eyes under his bangs. I don't remember anything else about him. There's also one other character who's Chiken's friend, but she's irrelevant to the plot. That's it. That's all the characters who appear in this manga, other than one-off characters like the principal.
The art is this manga's saving grace. This is the strongest part of the manga, hands down. It's gorgeous, and I love it. This was the biggest thing that kept me invested in this manga, alongside the initial addictiveness of the chapters. The character designs are super cute, and it has a very strong, distinctive charm. Even if I am not a fan of Karin Anzai's writing, I love her art. She's a talented artist, and I'd like to see more of her designs.
It's not a bad series by any means. It just feels empty and shallow, which is odd for a series called "It Takes More Than a Pretty Face". Ironically, the pretty artwork is the best part of the series, with everything else being lackluster. I'd say it's on the lower end of average, with additional points added because I'm weak against pretty art.

90/100It Takes more than a Pretty Face to Fall in Love and I'm so OBSESSED with this mangaContinue on AniListFirst, I need to say that I'm OBSESSED with this manga, so expect a totally biased review!
Chiken Sana is an airheaded girl who is obsessed with guys with beautiful faces (can we blame her? LOL) and chose to attend Minowa Sougou High School basically because of her "eye candy": Ugou Kanato, an extremely handsome senior who supposedly studies there.
After a series of hilarious events, Chiken (admit it, you're reading "Chicken") ends up meeting her idol and becomes responsible for his Instagram account, where their main goal is to reach a certain number of followers so that the boy doesn't get expelled from school (the school principal is terrible LOL). Since the girl is addicted to social media and good-looking guys, the task is more than enjoyable for her. It's really fun to see the female protagonist having mini meltdowns because of Kanato-senpai's beauty.
I know some people are bothered by Kanato's "apathy," but I see him as an extremely reserved guy who had the "misfortune" of being born handsome LOL. Their relationship development happens in an adorable way, and Kanato gradually reveals that he's not just a pretty face but an enchanting guy. It becomes clear that he has various issues because of his appearance and getting closer to Chiken allows him to be a bit more himself.
It's also been really cute to see the female protagonist dealing with her feelings: from the excitement of having such a gorgeous guy close to her, to the realization that it's not just his looks that make him incredible and that she was truly falling for him. I found myself laughing out loud at many moments due to the "number one fan of handsome guys" outbursts and the situations she puts herself in.
I believe that the security of being able to admire pretty guys from afar is one of the things that brings immense happiness to Chiken, which made me think about the feelings we have for idols: we're happy when they're happy, even though they don't even know we exist (LOL). When she finds herself involved with these people in real life, she needs to learn how to deal with this overwhelming excitement and needs to grow up (but still maintains her fangirl personality, which is very nice).
Of course, I have to highlight another one of my favorite characters: Doigaki! Seriously, the best plot in this manga! His personality is wonderful and... I won't give any more details to avoid spoiling the story.
To wrap up this review that is actually a love letter to It Takes More than a Pretty Face to Fall in Love, I highly recommend this manga as a light-hearted title where you don't need to take things too seriously and can have many laughs and meltdowns with the cute romantic scenes.
