30/100This series has nothing of what made Konosuba endearingContinue on AniListYou know that extremely annoying character from KonoSuba? The one that is annoying all the time and that I hate with all my heart? The one who ruins every scene that character is in because of every stupid thing that character says? Yeah, that character is Kazuma, thank God he isn't here. But sadly, that is one of the only good things I can give credit to this series, because this series lacks basically everything that made KonoSuba endearing.
This series is a spin-off about Megumin and how she was before she was part of Kazuma's group. There is a little problem with this, and that is that Megumin's personality in the main series is entirely based on "explosion" and that's pretty much it, in this series it is even worse, as half of the series is focusing on her trying to get levels to cast explosion magic. You see, this is a problem in general, because KonoSuba characters aren't actually fully fledged characters, Megumin isn't actually a character on her own, she is part of a set of characters that when they aren't together they come out as pretty boring and feel empty. The banter between Kazuma's group is what made this series oh-so-funny and endearing, the characters in this series are completely uninteresting as the only characters who we actually care are Megumin and Yunyun, and as I said, they are an incomplete part of a set when going alone.
Take for example the first couple of episodes of this series, when they are in the school, there are these characters that are copies of Megumin look-wise but with big to huge breasts, but it is impossible to recognize who is who unless you memorize their breast size, I honestly remember them that way, however, they are no part of the set created to fit for Megumin, so they fall flat in interactions with her, the jokes don't land because these characters are uninteresting. Which leads me to say that Megumin doesn't fit in a leading role, I know I said just above that Kazuma is someone I dislike a lot, however, he works as a main since he is the person who keeps on check the other characters while doing his own banter, he does in fact have some personality and while paired with the other girls it makes it work, even if just makes the series work as a meme more than as a story, meanwhile, Megumin has Yunyun to be her "straight man", and she just doesn't work for that role. We also have what is basically a repeat of stuff that happens in the main series, the episodes in Arcanletia with Axis Order are basically the same as the ones that were in the second season, doesn't matter if these happened chronologically before.
Thankfully, despite the studio change the series looks pretty much the same, so you can feel better if you were worried about it looking different. All in all, unless you are a big fan of Megumin, who I am not, then this spin-off is basically something completely uninteresting, so if you like the series just wait for the third season.
Thank you for reading.

75/100Doesn't retcon any of the lore, and can be quite interesting at moments.Continue on AniListNow Konosuba has been a quite polarizing subject, back when the LN and the anime was released, it was a BIG turning point for Isekai, in which, can be for the better and worse, this one though, is for me, felt at least decent.
For the animation department, it is nice, at least:
2 studio changes later (from Deen, to J. C., to Drive now), the animation could be a LITTLE bit stiff, the first 3 episodes are prominent of this stiff and somewhat clunky animation from Drive
However, the studio SEEMED to learn that in the later episodes, and especially when Megumin did her first Explosion, the animation is greatly improved, as for the most part, they still stay true to what made Konosuba entertaining.
The characters felt at least decent, and more screen time, along with development of the other Crimson Demons (Arue, and Funifura) we've seen in the movie
:No Kazuma, Aqua, Darkness are present (or pivotal to the plot), so I won't be covering them in this review, but the subtlety is quite fun, to say the least.
The "Known" characters first:
Megumin: still the same Chuunibyou who is majorly obsessed of planting stadium-sized craters into forests, this time around, we get a reason as to why: she has the staff, she wants to learn explosion magic, and the eyepatch (momentarily)
She still has the big flaw (can only spawn a nuke one time a day, making her somewhat useless in some scenarios), so her personality is still kept, and doesn't ruin any of the original lore
Same goes for Yunyun, still the same Rival/Friend of Megumin, but her personality is shown a LOT more here, mainly her socialization with others.
Arue and Funifura: They are the reasons why Megumin has the eyepatch and the staff, and they're overall quite goofy and likeable.
Bukkorori: Doesn't serve much to the plot, or ANYTHING.
The new characters:
Cecily: Introduced halfway through the show, she is one of the most silly, and goofy characters in this ENTIRE show, while she does help Megumin a lot, she is still quite a charming character.
Zesta: somewhat perverted, and there's one time he was wrongfully punished for some reason.
Arnes and Host: quite the same (they want Chomusuke), and they're intimidating, although I don't like how they kill off Host though.
The story is decent:
It is still engaging, BUT the worldbuilding is just mediocre at moments, Arcanletia suffers from this the most.
Overall, If you want more Konosuba (before season 3), then this is a watch, but it's not ENTIRELY essential, and if you DO watch it, you will find some bits and pieces interesting.

60/100Definitely worse than regular Konosuba. The presence of Kazuma, Aqua, and Darkness is sorely missed.Continue on AniListThe main attraction of Konosuba is that it is a complete comedy that isn’t serious. If we compare this season to the previous two seasons and the legend of Crimson movie, it does its job just fine. Konosuba never had a plot in the first place so the fact that absolutely nothing happens in this spin-off shouldn’t bother you given that you have watched the first two seasons and the movie. Right off the bat, the characters are obviously different, and the show is too. I simply think that the series is not as funny without Satou Kazuma, Aqua, and Darkness. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that Megumin and Yunyun are good characters, but the two of them alone could not sustain the levels of comedy that the main cast was able to. There are essentially 3 split arcs in the season. I think the comedy picks up from episode 7 onwards specifically
Plot: [7/10] - As mentioned earlier, there are about 3 main arcs in the series, the first one taking up about 6 episodes and around 3 each for the second two. Essentially, Megumin and Yunyun find themselves in different places in each of these arcs. The story is told in a fashion where a conflict or scenario is introduced at the start of each episode and then largely resolved by the end. It was interesting enough that you will be entertained to watch the whole episode but its nothing special or complex.
Characters: [6/10] - Konosuba suffers without its main cast and it’s evident in this season. The way Kazuma bounces off of Aqua and Darkness for comedy is sorely missed and just cannot be replicated by Megumin and Yunyun. Megumin isn’t a super complex character but her ideas and desire to become a powerful explosion magic user as a prodigious talent leads her into funny scenarios where she is scamming people, blowing stuff up, and yelling at people. Comedy-wise, she functions as a straight man along with Yunyun. Moving on to our second main character Yunyun, she isn’t a great character. She lacks autonomy and clings to Megumin and does not really do anything. She just exists to move alongside Megumin as her “rival.” She is basically the same fanservice-y character from previous seasons. The side characters like dodonko, funifura, and arue don’t get enough screentime to be super relevant in the rating but they are average at best. Arue is pretty funny though. There is barely any Kazuma, Aqua, and Darkness so they won’t be included here.
Art/Animation: [8/10] - Same artsyle, but the animation is still brilliant. The few fight scenes are done admirably and the infamous megumin explosion is always visually appealing. The animation felt smooth overall, did it’s job and a litttle more.
Voice Acting/Soundtrack: [6/10} - Apart from Rie Takahashi on Megumin and Aki Toyosaki on Yunyun there is nothing special in the voice acting department. Same old goofy nonsense. Opening and ending were alright, nothing special.
Conclusion: Konosuba does it’s job in being somewhat entertaining for Konosuba fans, and maintains enough of it's comedic value and goofiness to be an ok watch. However, the main cast is sorely missed and the quality does suffer as a result due to overly repetitive comedy and plot. It is serves as a prequel of sorts and is worth watching for konosuba fans to set up season 3. 6/10 thanks for reading
