DESCRIPTION
Kazuma Satou decides that today is the day to get out of the house for a bit. Since he dies, pointlessly, it's clearly a bad choice. The goddess who greets him in the afterlife, however, offers him a chance to be reborn in a world not unlike that of a video game, and as a bonus she'll even throw in a cool item or power! Can't possibly be a bad choice, right? Except he arrives with no money at all, dead average skills, and his "bonus" isn't useful at all--since he picked the goddess, Aqua, herself. How are the two of them supposed to defeat the evil Devil King and live happily ever after? Well, for them, it probably starts with day laboring rather than adventuring. And it's only going to get more disappointing from there!

99/100Konosuba is gobs of fun. Megumin is best girl.Continue on AniListAnime of Winter 2015/2016. Yeah, I called it.
This show is freaking hilarious. Never before has Studio Deen, the studio behind the subpar adaption of Fate/Stay Night surprised me so much. This wasn't even on my radar going into this season. And for good reason. Konosuba is riding on the "ordinary guy forced to live in a fantasy world" trope and trend that anime seems intent on pumping out every single season. But I gotta say, it's riding it out of the park and straight through rainbow road.
The comedy behind the show is a parody intent on subverting everything typical of a JRPG fantasy adventure. Konosuba follows the adventures of Satou Kazuma and his merry party as they struggle to survive in a fantasy world where the demon lord is attempting to rule all mankind. His party consists of Aqua (a bonafide goddess turned Arch Priest), Megumin (an Arch Wizard capable of the strongest offensive magic there is) and Darkness (a Crusader with incredible defense and 'tolerance' for pain). This is the makings of a great generic story except there's a catch: everyone except Kazuma has a personality fault the size of San Andreas. Getting to learn about these characters and witnessing their antics is the best part about this show. Naturally, Kazuma sticks to the straight man routine for most of the show, but he does it really well. His comebacks usually serve to add more fuel to the comedic bonfire going.
And its all so, so great. I haven't seen a show this consistently funny since Gintama. It's one of the shows where once you've seen the first episode, you know exactly what you're getting into. Well, except the animations are sometimes weird. Like, really weird. That bit is faithful to the Deen fame at least, for better or worse. Seriously, the boob physics were sometimes so loose it reminded me of Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita.
Still, there are 2 things that prevent this aspect of the show from turning into a fault. The show doesn't take itself very seriously so having a similar animation style that matches its overall mood suits it strangely enough. Also, there is a pretty tight restriction on female related fanservice that is methodical. What I mean is that everything that is featured in Konosuba is always part of or is setup for some gag. This includes episode 9 where they went full throttle on that service, so much so it made my boner laugh. It is brilliant in its execution.
Not an episode went by where I wasn't laughing my ass off. Regardless, I had a blast and am very much looking forward to more.

85/100Studio Deen provides a great escape.Continue on AniListOne of the great things about watching animated shows, is that the creative teams are allowed a variety of choices when deciding what to adapt or create into a season. In any given season, you may get 2 or 3 similar shows that use the same setting but come up with different ways to engage an audience. In recent years there has been a trend of shows focused around a person or group trapped in a fantasy/online game universe. Series like No Game,No Life and Sword Art Online__ are the best examples of how this scenario is handled. But neither show was able to play with concept and the absurdity quite like Konosuba- God's Blessing on this wonderful world. While the show may seem shallow in its nature, its cleverness and ability to play with the viewers expectations are outstanding.
_Konosuba _from its beginning episode revels that it has the patience to give its jokes a huge payoff. Every introduction for a character is an example of how to frame a joke. Kazuma -the male protagonist- is a shut in who stays up late to play games and do nothing of importance with his life. His awkward death is caused by his own misunderstanding, forcing him to act out of character to save a student. Kazuma finds out from a goddess named Aqua that he in fact didn't save anyone and died pathetically from the shock of being hit by a slow-moving tractor. In a unregeal like manner, Aqua laughs at Kazuma and makes fun of him for his pointless death. This behavior is what drives Kazuma to get revenge on Aqua by bringing her into the fantasy world and out of her life of comfort as an arbiter of the dead. Thus setting the show the in motion.
The amount time for those two jokes is only ten minutes, which is just an example of how entwined the comedy within _Konosuba _is. It is unrelenting in providing the audience with a certain trope or style for each character and then inverting it until it stands on its own. Darkness, the crusader in the Kazuma party, is an extreme machoist. To the point that even villainous foes are off put by her interpretations of what will happen to her should she fail in battle. Their "mage" Megumin, is aroused by destroying things with explosion magic that she can only use once a day. These are just two of a handful individuals that inhabit the shows textbook exterior.
Of course my exuberance for Konosuba's comedy and characters comes at an inconvenience, due to the over abundance of unnecessary lewdness that some female characters are depicted in. This presence of such material is not irritating just distracting from the overall rhythm established by the continuous comedy. In fact, the show needs to use this lewdness to hit punch lines (Kazuma accidentally stealing panties once he has learned a thief skill, having two characters in need of a bathroom while their house is haunted, Darkness becoming aroused as she loses her armour in battle) otherwise the behavior and reaction to certain jokes will fall flat. The show plays with the expectation of having attractive characters, most memorably in a bath scene in later episodes. This subversion by the studio staff is what makes the viewing of the Konosuba a treat. But throughout the ten episodes there are numerous shots of Aqua's butt at a low angle, unnatural swaying of breasts and ridiculously dressed bartenders unused in jokes or gags. It is merely fodder, that distracts from the flow of an episode at inconvenient times.
It is unfortunate that the staff went along with this decision to edit shots in such a manner. I would strongly advise people, both veterans and newcomers of the genre, to watch this show if it was not for this flaw. Of course I understand the reasoning for this, all shows are just advertisements to sell something related to the source material. This is the unavoidable truth when dissecting Japanese animation. The best way to sell something to a male dominated audience, would be to appeal to the lustful desire that comes from an attachment to a character. In the case of Konosuba, the sex appeal and sophomore humor were going to be hand in hand if the show was going to make fun of harem scenarios involving a shut in and three women. Ultimately it just took a step to far, making a timely comedy feel cheap and lazy in certain portions of its run.
Recommending Konosuba is not even a debate. You should watch it. The only advice is that you prepare yourself for moments that may or may not feel needed. Whether you are a person who has watched 5 shows or 100, give the show a chance to impress you. The voice acting is superb, and the progression of the story is unhindered by the comedy, rather it is propelled forward from the disasters and collateral damage that is left in Kazumas wake. One could only hope that a second season would be released, until then all anyone can do is wait.
Things of Interest
I failed to mention that Studio Deen was responsible for the show. Kudos to them for putting together a great staff for the show. Especially to the sound direction of Iwanami Yoshikazu.
And speaking of Studio Deen, some of the animation is awkward in wide shots. Not to the level of Log Horizon, but it's there if you look for it.

70/100Review of KONOSUBA, Includes comments about the story, animation, sound and characters xxContinue on AniListWarning this Review May Contain Spoilers
Ahh another one of my fabulous reviews, this time it's for Konosuba a 2016 anime which caught be by surprised, even though it isn't a series one I felt myself enjoying it so much and it makes me happy to say that I'll probably enjoy writing this as well. So this really is just a bit of fun from the start, guy dies in stupid way and ends up in a fantasy world where it's all like an MMO as a way of him being reborn.
STORY
Even though it relied quite heavily on short jokes the story wasn't bad for a 10 episode anime, and I do suspect that quite a bit was missed out from the light novel...like I have seen happen before. Overall the story was pretty enjoyable and i can't wait to see what the second series would be like, but even then there were points where I thought it just needed a tiny bit more. I NEED MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT...
ANIMATION
The animation was good, there were a few moments where it looked slightly off but it was good enough for me to score it an 8. Once again I haven't got much to say about this other than there were moments just just felt a bit weird.
SOUND
Sound was good, like the opening and ending but that's all I can really say. (They also fit the lighthearted series they go with). The voice-acting was perfect, the voices were good for the characters presented and yeah, they were good. I do want to look into the characters a bit further by reading the light novel but for now I thing they represented the type of characters quite well.
CHARACTERS
Characters, now this is a series where I want to talk through the characters, they were fun and lovable and honestly quite typical. Our main is a NEET Otaku obsessed with the world of 2-D and this was like a dream come true to him but what I really liked about him is that he wasn't the whole I'm completely useless at the start and by the end he is the strongest like so many other main characters, yeah he gets stronger but he adds a more comedic side to being like him. Aqua was probably our main female to counteract Kazuma so I'll talk about her, she is bubbly and probably a complete contrast from our main male which works. I also want to point out that I like how there isn't a romantic relationship between these two characters or any other characters and our main. Special mention to Megumin and Darkness who just added a bit more to the story which made me laugh out loud a couple of times XD
Anyway that ends another one of my reviews, bye bye.
