50/100I have a fetish, there is no subtextContinue on AniListIf you were to ask me why I watched this anime, it’s because I like gyarus. If you were to ask me why I watch any gyaru anime, it’s because I like gyarus.
This subgenre has become a product that exists only for its own sake, there is no further message attached to it, the gyaru is a holistic being that justifies its own existence. Thankfully, it seems that the people making these gyaru works have taken notice of this and are trying to turn the self-cannibalization of the niche into an opportunity to try new things. Dosanko Gal is not the most exemplary of this, similar dynamics have been tried before and manga like Gal Gohan does it better; but I’m sure in the recent sleuth of romance and SoL shows this one still feels rather refreshing. Layering on top of this an atlas style exploration of one of Japan’s most beautiful but most often overlooked areas results in a pleasant combination that has facilitated the wasting away of many an evening.
While I can’t say that this show does anything for me – barring the gyarus of course – it still presents a few nuggets that I think are interesting enough to deserve a further look.
For starters, Hokkaido to me is a mythical place. Outside of various historical works I rarely get the chance to see it represented, and being made aware of the small quirks and obstacles that come with everyday life here I’ve grown even more fond of it. Unfortunately, this show doesn’t take the concept far enough, its more so a show with gyarus in Hokkaido rather than a show about Hokkaido gyarus, even the different slang and dialect seems to fall off later in the show or is otherwise tokenized. Maybe to my untrained eye the depth of details has escaped, but as it stands the exploration of Hokkaido here is not so different from what I'd get in a video from the most affable British youtuber.
In the point I made earlier about similar dynamics I was referring to this anime’s attempt at abandoning miscommunication induced drama. These kinds of shows abandon drama in nearly all forms anyway but this specific kind is one so often seen in romance stories that it has become cliché, it isn’t a bad device in and of itself but it has become very predictable. Fuyuki is a character that aims to reduce these frustrations, up until the final two episodes there is no moment made worse by a misunderstanding, there is no jumping to conclusions, and there is no irritation between the leads. On paper at least his sounds both wonderful and harrowing, I’m not sure there are many stories out there made better by removing intrigue, at the same time however I can’t say that this is purely a bad thing either. With no valleys, all your peaks start looking like plateaus.
I realize that I may be a bit of a hypocrite, and that maybe I just enjoy the novelty of losing all the friction, but at the same time I haven’t seen enough of this “anti-trope” to know that for sure so until then I will keep welcoming these kinds of stories.
As for why anyone should bother watching this anime, ask yourself if you like gyarus. I’m not kidding when I say how distilled this subgenre has become, this show doesn’t even attempt having a subtext, and while it tries to separate itself from the chaff by playing opposites to the exhausted cliches, until some larger shift happens in the story you won’t be getting much more than “just gyaru” out of its text. The depth is wafer thin and maybe that’s a deal breaker for you or maybe you just really like wafers.

66/100Gals may be cute but Hokkaido is betterContinue on AniListNext review is up which is Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable. To be completely honest with you guys, I only decided to watch this anime thinking it would be a fun gyaru girl styled anime. Turns out it was a nice anime to watch (it did pass the 3-episode rule) with less gyaru styled girls seasoning than I expected. __Story__ So, let’s begin the review as always with what the anime is about. Which is absolutely nothing lol, no serious there’s nothing crazy going on. We have our MC Tsubasa who moves from Tokyo to Hokkaido with his grandmother. Now being the new kid on block, he meets our other MC Fuyuki at a bus stop and basically falls in love at first sight. From there we basically watch Tsubasa’s everyday life living in Hokkaido. Now I will say one thing I loved about this anime is the learning experience of Hokkaido. I’ve learned that Hokkaido is like the countryside within the US and has a cold climate out there. So, seeing how the people from Hokkaido live (I know this is an anime, but it must be based on real life right?) is very cool. Now outside of this we do see our main character become friends with 3 girls the Gyaru (Fuyuki), the gamer (Akino), and the perfectionist (Rena). Yes, in some way the show makes you choose which of the 3 girls Tsubaso will go after. Personally, I was rooting for Akino after the skiing episode. I sadly thought there was going to be some major development in their relationship. __Characters__ I did basically a brief description of the characters, however, let’s get into their development within the story. Tsubasa, our MC is not exactly a Chad but with the 3 girls who obviously have feelings for him you can make an argument that he is. Within the anime as we learned about Hokkaido so did he. Most of the episodes if not all of them were him experiencing something they can do in Hokkaido for the first time. We really did not see him push for something more than a friendship with either girl until the last episode where he committed a typical movie trope where the main guy rushes to the airport before the girl leaves. Fuyuki, if you jumped into this anime for Fuyuki well congrats, she’s every bit of the character I expected her to be. We see her make major developments with realizing her feelings for Tsubasa and even realizing the other girl's feelings for him which ultimately lead to her asking Tsubasa out on a date. Now getting totally off topic but did you guys see how badly our girl Fuyuki was trying to get some action from Tsubasa lmao, I mean inviting him over and pretending to be sleep in near nothing pj’s. Also don’t let me get started on the igloo scene, not to mention the bathtub scene. I hope she got what she wanted lol. Akino is the purple haired gamer girl who initially was introduced as a total introvert. I personally think they dropped the ball with her as a character. So much could have been done with her, but they focused on Fuyuki instead. After the ski trip we rarely saw her and Tsubasa in a frame alone together. I wished she would’ve shown a bit more determination with her conviction of her feelings for Tsubasa, but it never happened. Rena is almost like the wildcard of this anime because she arrived out of nowhere and she was just thrown in the story as the cute and smart (obviously) but perfect girl. She even had the courage to ask Tsubasa on a date and almost to be his girlfriend. This is exactly what I meant with Akino not showing her conviction with her feelings but after their date Gals in Hokkaido dropped the ball again with putting her in the last few episodes simply looking for Tsubasa at his house while he isn’t even there. Like what's the purpose of that? __Animation__ The animation is fine, nothing bad to comment about. I do appreciate the different style changes within the anime, so the characters aren’t always wearing their uniforms. What stands out the best within animation wise is the background; some of the background details can be overlooked but must be appreciated if we are speaking of animation. Music wise, I hated the intro, absolutely hated it but the ending song was nice. __Conclusion__ Hokkaido Gals are Super Cute is simply that a cute anime, the characters are nice and very well designed but ultimately it left me wanting more (not in a good way), they didn’t make me anxious enough with choosing a girl for Tsubasa. Not only that, but they also only tugged at your heart with the last two episodes only to be highly disappointed by the ending of the series. The Gals are cute, but Hokkaido may be the only good thing within this anime.I recommend this anime with a - __Eh why am I watching this__ _Anime with a score of 60-70 receives a " Eh why am I watching this"_.
