REVIEWS
Wonsul
90/100A vivid story about determination and redemption.Continue on AniListWelcome to my not so helpful and wildly subjective review of Shin Angyo Onshi!
It made me sad seeing it wasn't reviewed yet, so here goes. Note that I read this manga over 10 years ago, so this is solely based on my fond memories of it.You follow the adventures of Munsu, the last Angyo Onshi. An angyo onshi is like a peacekeeper, in the kingdom of Jushin. And he is the last one because the kingdom is actually destroyed, at the hands of Aji Tae, some sort of unbeatable demon disguised as a charming and playful human being.
The kingdom really turned into an ugly place where only the strong prevail, giving it some sort of post-apocalyptic vibe.
Munsu keeps doing his job punishing evil landlords as an angyo onshi reluctantly, as he promised his friend and former king. But Munsu isn't the gentle type and refuses to be seen as a savior. He isn't the type to throw himself into a fight because some thing is "wrong" or "unfair."
He is strong, but still ordinary. Why bother with honor if you just die trying? Hence, he is very good at playing dirty and outsmarting people, but he still does the sort of "right" thing in the end, making him a charismatic and pleasant character. He doesn't help people out of charity, he gives a hand only to those who show the courage to fight for themselves.Chun Hyang and Bang Ja quickly follow him on his quest as support characters.
Wait, what quest? At first it feels like he is just traveling to do his duty, but then makes it very clear that his objective is Aji Tae. Oh, wow, kill the bad guy, very original... It feels like that for a very long time, until the manga takes a turn. When he meet his former lover's sister and supposedly dies.
I never thought I'd see the day when a flashback is actually interesting. Like, REALLY captivating. It takes up a few volumes but gives meaning to the whole story. It makes sense of Munsu's quest, which is a quest for redemption, as the kingdom's collapse appears to be his fault.
Now, you follow Munsu's unbreakable will to correct his mistake by defeating Aji Tae even if it kills him. He acts due to his own guilt, not because he feels he has some duty to save the world, making him very human. He is no longer just another smart and badass "anti-hero." Behind his very confident and strong look, you feel all of Munsu's sadness, guilt, love, hatred, and will to die trying to atone. The build up for the final battle between Munsu and Aji Tae is very well presented as Aji Tae is some kind of invincible devil who can kill anyone just by saying "die", whereas Munsu is just a fragile human being with no superpower, but a freaking confident one.
And even if apparently Munsu is the only one capable of resisting that "die" spell, Aji Tae is as cocky as ever, and so is Munsu.Spoiling the ending here: Until the very end, Munsu doesn't yield and, even in death, defies Aji Tae one last time to bring victory.
The other characters remain interesting and well developped as the backstory is revealed as well, even if the link between Munsu and Aji Tae is still the main point of the story.
Honorable mention for the story of Wonsul, former comrade of Munsu... so sad!As subjective as I can be, the art is simply gorgeous, and helps depict the feeling of rampant rot and corruption in the kingdom very well. You can really feel the world dying around you.
The art does a great job at making most characters bleed charisma by every hole. It really makes you feel the absurd power of the likes of Aji Tae or Wonsul, the determination and cunning of Munsu (and the curves of Chung Hyang...).As a closing thought, this manga is clearly worth your time, give it some love!
