DESCRIPTION
Time holds little meaning for Beatrice the Millennial Witch. Replaying the events leading up to the Golden Banquet again and again only gives her more opportunity to play with her new favorite toy, Battler Ushiromiya. The boy's will to resist the witch remains strong as the curtain rises for a third time on the Ushiromiya family's annual reunion. But as Beatrice pulls more and more players into the game, the strain on Battler's defenses is evident. Do the other members of his family hold the key to solving the witch's riddle and sealing her defeat?!

92/100When more witches rear their heads and the longer the debate goes on, the more I wonder about the truth.Continue on AniListWell, I have finally returned to my much loved Umineko review series! I just got sidetracked by a lot of shoujo. And I have to say that this keeps getting better and better. I'm wondering if this part will set the stage for how more of the parts will be approached since it was a bit different from the previous two parts.
This time around, while the Ushiromiya murders take place, we see a lot more of Battler and Beatrice's battle of wits, as Battler tries to refute the existence of witches and prove his family members' innocence. More and more witches come into play, creating an entirely different atmosphere. Meanwhile, we get to glimpse into Eva Ushiromiya's psyche and past, revealing her motivations and darkest aspects of her personality. This time there's less of a mystery and more debate.
I found this approach to be very refreshing, since I was expecting an alternate retelling of parts 1 and 2. I think the inclusion of other witches is very interesting, as well as the discussion of the true nature of witches. We even get to see a tiny bit of Beatrice's past, as well as her explanation of her origin. I am still very confused as to why Battler doesn't believe in witches while he's being held hostage in a time-loop by multiple witches and demons. I don't know what rational explanation he has for that or his thought process. If it weren't the work of witches, this would be the biggest thing that I'd be curious about. That's the main factor that keeps me believing in witches, but some of Beatrice's later actions and words left me doubting the tiniest bit.
I do like the new witch characters. My favorite was the witch Virgilia, Beatrice's wise mentor who aids Battler. While they weren't introduced until recently, I am curious about the quiet, stoic Bernkastel and the childish Lambdadelta. I have a lower opinion of Rudolph, Battler's father, this time around. He does not sit right with me. As for Battler, he is growing on me, and I am glad that the perverted side of his personality is completely gone to the point where I feel like Part 1 Battler is a completely different Battler. He feels more mature this time around, and his reactions feel a lot more human. Beatrice also feels more human this time around, showing loneliness and seeming to learn compassion. However, she remains an enigma with more mysterious aspects of her personality. In order to fully discuss her and Eva, I will have to go into spoiler territory.
I had a lot of complicated feelings toward Eva this time around. I could empathize with the sexism she went through. I haven't experienced the violent misogyny that Eva did, but I have dealt with guys who talked down to me because I'm a girl. I could feel her regret in how she let her selfishness destroy her son's life and chance of happiness. I was starting to warm up to her a bit.
But then Eva-Beatrice happened, and Eva-Beatrice is just the worst. I'm unsure if I would be able to disconnect her from Eva, since Eva-Beatrice seems to be an alternate personality that was dormant for a while. Eva-Beatrice represents Eva's ambition, and she began as a voice in Eva's head, guiding her actions towards her dream of becoming the family head. When Eva's alternate self becomes Beatrice's successor, she reveals a greedy, twisted side to her personality. If Eva-Beatrice reflects Eva in any way, I am very scared. The disturbing ways she murdered her younger sister and little niece over and over still makes me shiver. She even murdered her own son in cold blood.
Even if Eva-Beatrice is just an alternate personality and not a separate entity born of Eva's darker thoughts and ambitions, mixed with magic, Eva is still upsetting to me. Essentially, she was the murderer this time around, and the way she perpetuated the cycle of abuse further onto Ange was awful. She treats her only surviving family member after the rest were massacred awfully, despite Ange being very young.
Beatrice was very complicated this time around. I found her personality to be interesting. This time we see a more repentant Beatrice, who seems to be maturing. However, the twist at the end was very unsettling. A part of me did believe that she does feel guilty for her actions, but she's lonely and wants to keep the game going on longer. I'm very curious about her real intentions and personality.
Despite the art being done by the same person who did the art for Part 1, I feel like it improved. The designs weren't as sexualized as they were before, and there weren't any of the creepy high Muppet faces that were in Part 2. There can be creepy faces without the characters looking like puppets that are on something. So I think this time around the art combines the best qualities of Part 1 and Part 2.
I do like Umineko and I can't wait to read Part 4! The introduction of Ange Ushiromiya is exciting, and I find her character to be compelling. This series just keeps improving, and I can't wait to see what it has in store for me.
