100/100The Definition of Guilty PleasureContinue on AniListKuzu no Honkai is the perfect guilty pleasure manga. I have never felt so uncomfortable reading a manga, but i was sucked in and could not stop reading no matter how unnerved I was.
From the first chapter one of the mangas strongest points is its realism. It is just two high schoolers who have an unrequited love which in return makes them feel empty and alone. To fill their void they start doing more and more intimate with each other as a coping mechanism / substitute for the love that they can never achieve.(SPOLER STARTS HERE)
But the more they go on the more restless they become. They become addicts to this high of intimacy and start doing everything to get it. Because now that they know what its like to have this feeling they cant just go back to living their normal, lonesome life in which their only happiness was watching their crush who would never love them back from afar. But the main characters are not the only people who struggle with loneliness. Every single character has his own problems and coping mechanisms for them. The best friend of the main girl has a crush on her which she knows is one-sided, but even though she knows the feelings are not mutual she still starts making moves on her when main girl is mentally in the gutter. The two have an affair but they get broken up at what point she cant accept it and does everything she can to make main girl not even like her but just be intimate with her again.
(SPOILER ENDS HERE)
By far the best thing Kuzu no Honkai does, is not having bad guys. Every single character is just lonely and depressed and does whatever they can to fill their loneliness. No one gets singled out and blamed because everyone is at fault. Their desires slowly take over their entire existence and soon they dont care about anything as long as they can finally distract themselves from their cruel and sad reality. In which they will never have what they desire.
It is really easy to relate to many of the characters and feel with them, This feeling of uneasiness I got while reading is not just the dark themes which are prominent but that i sympathized with the themes and projected myself onto some characters.CONCLUSION
Kuzu no Honkai is a brilliant and realistic depiction of the loneliness inside of people and what it can do not only to them but to everyone around them. It shows so good just the decend of the characters who slowly lose themselves in their coping mechanisms and how they affect them.Aashish1221
74/100A great choice if you want to have a roller coaster with your feelings.Continue on AniListThe Feeling of Unrequitted Love
I personally recommend reading the Manga than watching the anime first.
It's got a more descriptive and poignant touch to it. The anime feels like a summarised version. The events just feel like it's passing a bit fast. It should have been a slower move to show the intimate scenes yo involve the audience in a better atmosphere. The Manga feels like it's happening in the moment and you are in it, empathizing with the characters. The episodes advance slowly, giving a better experience. For example, in the part where Ecchan visits Hanabi for a sleepover, the different odd feelings she experiences and the confusion at the moment she's on her bed is so well expressed in the Manga wheras the anime has a 2 minute exposure of it.
Art: The characters are very well described according to their roles. The oneness of Hanabi in front of Mugi and their kisses are just raw. It's not ecchi but still has got the seductive features that make the readers fall in love with it. Akane is shown mostly smiling with her carefree nature except the for the final few episodes when she gets all tangled up in her own tactics. The fade away black ending page design is thoughtful choice when it comes to it's symbolism in the Manga. Mugi and Hanabi are in a constant fight with their own feelings and cannot get out. It's slowly consuming them into the darkness.
I, throughout the Manga, had ups and downs about my views of Hanabi. She seemed confused yet passionate about her love. But, she gets so much hurt by Akane that she commits the same rubbish acts as her.
Akane was one greatbitchthroughout the entire Manga. A man thirsty whore who cares least for others and takes pleasure in other's suffering.
Mugi was not so great either. It felt like he was just taking advantage of Hanabi owing to the situation.
Ecchan was the one who got hurt most and yet never gave up until she got tired of Hanabi not reciprocating her love in any way. She had selfless love for a selfish girl. I could not sympathise with he more. She had a sad end.
Narumi is displayed as a kind and good-hearted young man who loves women with long silky hair like his mother, hence he fell for Akane Minagawa. He was unexpectedly quite a lame guy but the only one who was not befitting the definition of a scum.
Ending: It was a most unexpected closure. I never expected such a thing could happen throughout the entire Manga. It's baffling to see how both Mugi and Hanabi lose at the end to get their true love. Yet, it was a happy ending.
Note that this is a personal review and doesn't intend to impose the fact that the anime is inferior or hurt the feelings of the creators who put a lot of work into it.
