79/100It's just season 1, but better in every conceivable way.Continue on AniListWow is it trying to make a tradition? Just like season 1, it has an absolutely amazing intro alongside a god awful outro. Seriously, the song is great (go check it out, it's called "Scrap Art") and I love how we see each faction/group of characters walk towards the camera towards the start and then each group from the other side pat death god on the head at the end, that is so dope.
Anyways. Read the title. It's season 1, but better. Seriously, it's that simple, all the things I feel season 1 did better than the manga, season 2 does better than season 1.Let's start by talking about pacing and tone, which I feel is what distinguishes the anime most from the manga (from what I've read of the manga). But first, we have to give a quick look at season 2's predecessors. The manga (in my opinion) constantly breaks up the pacing by talking about necessary details and continuously changing perspective and tone, which stops the story from feeling fluid and wastes SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH TIME on random unfunny jokes. The first season of the anime cuts on a lot of the random stuff that doesn't really lead anywhere, but keeps a lot of the joke scenes (which I didn't really find all that funny). Season 2 on the other hand, barely has any necessary stuff and instead of having comedy moments shoe-horned into serious scenes, gives us proper dedicated comedy scenes (and characters (who I adore and will come back to later)), meaning that the tone is now a lot more consistent, but also that the show is a lot more fluid since it doesn't have this weird stop-and-go pace from all the jokes breaking it up.
The characters are also a huge step up from season 1, which is mostly due to the characters already being mostly set and some of the more uninteresting characters being thrown to the sidelines. So while we get a lot less of Lemmings, Lisa, Takumi and Polka (and his family), a lot more time is given to characters who are either a lot more interesting or enjoyable like Sayo (I fucking love shark jokes),
Gentle CriminalPhantom Solitaire (my beloved), Civil and her gang, the Fire Breathing Bug(s) and every single character from Polka's original world. We also see Corpse God get a lot more involved (emotionally) in the plot which is massively more interesting than him just repeating "I just want a peaceful life". The voice actors also did a great job, especially my beloved (Solitaire), Fire Bug (they use 12 different VAs and I love it), Civil, Lulu and Misaki (who I feel was a lot more lively this season). So characters are also better than S1, but what about the story? Well I think it's obvious enough considering the title I gave this review, it's better. Everything this season feels like it has a point, unlike last season where some parts (fake fire bug and Hosorogi) felt kind of pointless, though this could very easily be attributed an overarching story pretty much not existing until the last few episodes of the last season, I still feel this season was a huge step up. Apart from 1 character's presence (Arahabaki) feeling kind of redundant and another feeling underdeveloped so far (Majiri) (though this one can definitely be attributed to her introduction being midway through the season), this story feels really good to watch, it's unique (especially all the other side stuff), has a bunch of cool moments and even if the last few episodes feel a bit rushed, I think that isn't an issue considering the fact it allows the story as a whole to fit perfectly within the constraint of a season (honestly, if you told me the manga's story ended where season 2 ended, I would've believed you).
The animation also feels like a step up, last season had good visuals, but not that many amazing ones with the only scene that massively stood out to me visually at the time being the Lemmings fight in the bar, where as, here, there are so many more dope unique visuals related to magic. Seriously, every time we get to see new magic, we also get to see new, dope visuals, which I'm all for, that is without taking into account Misaki and Xiaoyu's new abilities (and visuals that come alongside them)! We also get some more high speed combat scenes which look quite good, as always.
So yeah: Pacing's better; Jokes are better; Characters (old and new) all feel a lot more interesting; Story's more involving; Animation's better. What's not to love?
Very high 7. Would've been a low or mid 8 if it had a bit more music variety.
Don't forget to report the "Bastard Children of Sabaramond" to Solitaire TV if you hear about them!Rojikku
65/100I almost died waiting for them to stop talkingContinue on AniListI'm an idiot and got distracted mid series, and came back for the last four episodes. I know I liked it originally, but after coming back, I felt like nothing made sense.
Did I forget the plot? I don't think so. There was a lot of character development going on, and things like that. I sat and watched for like ten minutes while they talked about why X character let X character get kidnapped, and how it was because he secretly resented him, and that's why he wasn't on guard enough. But I'm just like "You...were in the other room. Please, just shut up."
Yes, I couldn't wait for everyone to shut up and actually fight. Of the last 4 episodes, maybe 1 is actual magic and fighting. The animation is good, but none of it really made sense to me, magic wise. Maybe important details were skipped, but I felt like there were a ton of plot holes. All of the character's movements just felt like they were doing whatever random thing they wanted. It's a chaos of tons of actors, while the main characters monologue about their growth and how they're just weak and pitiful human beings and feel sorry for themselves.
You could say that's realistic, because it's how real life operates. A bunch of people make a bunch of moves for a bunch of random goals. It just feels endlessly irritating when the main character is just chilling, being attacked, spied on, and stolen from by all these characters with these arbitrary goals- and he's just chilling. The fight where he deals with it isn't for two more episodes, we've got to monologue until then.Honestly, maybe it missed the impact because of the break, but I remember the details for this anime pretty clearly, so I don't think so.
If you like character development, and people talking, this is for you. I like people talking, but only when it's interesting. When they stop the fight to start monologuing, at least make it good, you know? "Oh, I'm not really strong, I'm just borrowing people's power." Please, shut up. That's what a necromancer is. I don't care about your introspection about how you're actually weak, finish the fight first, please.
Also, the fight made no sense to me. Honestly, it was just a bunch of flashing circles and the main character finally deciding to get over himself and actually use his main strength. There wasn't particularly any logic or intrigue to it, in my opinion. There were multiple scenes that touched my peeve, which is main characters being overpowered but having absolutely no sensory abilities of note when the author wants something to be surprising.
Okay. I firmly remember characters present having sensory abilities, and should have known X was approaching or X happened, but we're just going to pretend they can't now. I had a break, and I remember this, so why doesn't the author? It's just my personal opinion, but if you think you're a strong character, and you have no sensory abilities, you're worthless. If people can do stuff right under your nose, what do you even have power for? "I'm going to protect my friends!" The only thing protecting them is plot armor, all you can do is get revenge, honestly. You have nothing and no ability to protect, because you can't even tell what's going on in your own home. Personally, that and the constant talking and emotional introspect were enough to ruin the ending of this anime for me.
As a final note, I really hate the trope of "Oh, I'm not going to talk to you or reason things out, so our two parties will fight. But now that I've lost the fight we can be peaceful and understand each other." Just talk, you bastards. If they'd talked about the origin of their powers, and the things they did, and their goals, I would've been 10x more interested in that negotiation than 5 main characters feeling sorry for themselves for 40 minutes.
In my opinion, good premise, poor execution. Maybe you'll get more love from it than I, who paused half way, or maybe you'll have different taste. Just, do your best to ignore the author's brain lapses.
