100/100Rance - it's just a hentai you have to watchContinue on AniListRance is a well-known name in hentai history and really sparked something different in me when I first watched it. It has quite a long run time of 4 episodes and is one of the most story driven hentai I have watched which strives to break the societal norms and expectations that has plagued hentai quality checks. Many people assume hentai is just 'porn' or 'fap material' but Rance proves that a balance can be struck between story and sex which makes the material feel whole and not devoid of character motivation.
Story : 10
In the essence of preserving the first time watch experience of the viewer I will refrain from major spoilers and mainly cover introductory plot that you can glean from the synopsis and a broad overview of what makes Rance so enjoyable. I had watched Rance long ago and only just rewatched it, remarkably I remembered every plot point and many of the characters which feels so rare considering the large amount of hentai I consume which do little to leave an impression on me and fade in obscurity before long but Rance manages to keep fresh in my mind with a simple yet effective way of storyteling. The story covers our hero Rance, who is far from your run-off-the-mill blank slate hentai MC, a great warrior who has been tasked with finding a missing girl aided by his poorly treated and bumbling slave Sill. The great thing about Rance is that it is has a 'true' plot, meaning that there is something happening and isn't just there to facilitate our hero's sexual exploits which sadly is not so common in most hentai we see produced. The sex scenes are short in the grand scheme of the episode, we have two per episode on average and they are relative short but it doesn't matter because most people skip through long and arduous sex scenes so there is not really much point of them being long for the purposes of fapping. This is so great as it feels like we're watching something meant to be watched and not just fapped to, the longer story scenes provide motivation and background as to why Rance is able to fuck these girls giving us the key to this show : The fap is earned. You have to watch longer story scenes, which are entertaining, and you get these short sex scenes which you do not need to skip through which overall creates a better experience that no show has really been able to replicate.
Art : 8
Rance has great artwork, distinguishing between characters and serving to enhance personalities by manifesting these character traits into tangible physical features. The sidecharacter also have plenty of detail and are unique in design, the environment is drawn well and makes the world feel lived in which adds to the feeling of Rance being a 'whole' product. Furthermore we are treated to 'sakuga' fight scenes in the latter episodes which just makes me marvel at the quality of this show even more.
Sound : 7
The sound does not take away from the show but is nothing special, we have the standard set of sound effects and is adequate for the purposes of the show.
Character : 8
People may argue that Rance characterwise is not up to par with the story but this seems like a completely false statement to me. The main argument I feel is brought up is that Rance himself seems like your standard pervy MC but people who argue this miss the whole point of Rance. He is a caricature of the pervert, an embodiment of horniness which is the main driver in comedy for the show. He does not develop as a character because that isn't what he is supposed to do, he is 'the greatest warrior' and he will get whatever he wants while the other characters develop around him and comically are oblivious to his perverted habits while revering him as a hero. The bulk of character development comes from Rance's episode flings where within the episode we see how he establishes and develops relations with each girl as well as how they change how they treat him. All this however pales in comparison to the largest show spanning character arc which is with Rance's poor slave Sill which covers her major character shift as well as how she interacts with Rance.
I think Rance is a once in a blue moon sort of show with actual content instead of just a womb full of cum. Furthermore Rance doesn't really take any shortcuts to get the popularity it has attained such as shocking the audience with multiple outrageous tags and can be argued to be a more mellow hentai besides the OVA which I will do a short review on later. We have standard rape and hints of torture but pales in comparison to the extreme content shown in the OVA so even for the vanilla viewers it will not do what Euphoria has done to me by any stretch of the imagination. Rance is a universally loved show and unlike most popular hentai it is not 'infamous' in any way which is rather rare for hentai. I give Rance my highest recommendations with two faps an episode and one episode a session because letting the story sink in over multiple sessions guarantees a great experience
Notes on scoring :
- Score below 50% is a fail
- Going from 50%, the score of the section’s “badness” exponentially increases so 25% isn’t just half as bad as 50%
Scoring interpretation
- 60% is “barely good enough”
- 70% is “average”
- 80% is “definitely above average”
- 90% is “damn that’s legitimately good”
- 100% is “perfect”

72/100The new and improved Rance hentai.Continue on AniListA whole 21 years later and Rance fans get another adaptation of their favorite open world fantasy wank material. Just in time for the people who were born in the same year that the original was released in to start drinking.
Rance 01: The Quest for Hikari (Rance 01: Hikari wo Motomete The Animation) begins begins with Rance and Sill arriving in the majestic Kingdom of Leazas to find a missing noble girl. As they split up to investigate several leads, Rance finds himself aiding the townsfolk with various problems from rescuing a kidnapped barmaid to purging an undead outbreak. While amassing both fortune and females, the warrior eventually uncovers a dark secret within the kingdom that only he can stand against.
And continuing the tone that the first one had, the series begins with a scene where Rance rapes a woman multiple times before saving her, all while claiming that she was raped by a group of bandits, all because she was blindfolded. So if you're not into black comedy and slapstick, turn back now.
Just like the first, The Quest for Hikari makes a ton of jokes about how it's based on a series of RPG games, referencing the overhead perspective that so many 8-bit and 16-bit JRPGs had at the time for the anime's transitions as Rance makes his way around town asking people about the girl that he's looking for. Since the animation in most hentai aren't that appealing, it's neat not only getting decent animation, but some neat visual variety to go with the good animation.
The biggest difference between this and the last OVA is that the new series has 4 episodes and a special, which range from 26 to 30 minutes each, so there is quite a bit of content here. And because of the added content, every episode has at least 1 to 2 sex scenes each, and they're all good. So if you're looking for a hentai with some plot, The Quest for Hikari is right up there in terms of enjoyable plot.
The series even comes with some monster rape towards the end of the series, so if you're into that, it's got you covered.
The series is actually pretty well animated for a hentai, which is a rarity these days, considering that Queen Bee seems to intend to make hentai so poorly that a slideshow of the original source material would be an upgrade, so the good animation is very much appreciated here. You're bound to find something appealing in at least one or two of the sex scenes.
And coincidentally, or possibly intentionally as an homage to the original OVA, the first episode of this adaptation of Rance came out on December 26th, so it's another White Christmas! There are only so many times I get to make a White Christmas pun in my hentai reviews, so I'm going to revel in it.
